trying dictionaries. -online!

Today I have tried some different English monolingual online dictionaries to find out which is the best, easiest and fastest.

What I did was choose a selection of three words, elephant, big and driving. One nomen, one adjektive and verb, and found out which one gave me the most information.

1. http://www.thefreedictionary.com/

This dictionary was fast and quite easy to use as well. Although the first word was a bit difficult to find, it went a lot easier the second time. And if you spell the word you are looking for incorrectly, it offers suggestions of other similar words to use instead. It has a lot of info on the nomens and conjugates the verbs. And as a bonus there is a function that pronounces the words for you!

2. http://dictionary.cambridge.org/

This is very easy to use. It has a nice font and vas very fast. But it didn’t conjugate the verbs, so if that is what you are looking for, this one isn’t for you. As the last one, this also has a function that  pronounces the words for you!

3. http://www.onelook.com/?w=driving&ls=a

This one I didn’t like. It was complicated and it took me quite a long time to find the words I was looking for. The reason it took so long was because it wasn’t really a dictionary, but a browser that looked up dictionaries.

4. http://nhd.heinle.com/Definition.aspx?word=driving

This was okay. It wasn’t the best, but far from the worst. It was fast and easy to use. The thing that pulls it down is that it hasn’t got a pronounciation function. But I still quite liked it.

5. http://thesaurus.com/

This is great! It is my favorite. It was easy to use, fast and gave me a lot of information on the words. It also had the pronounciation function and good examples to all the words. And it came with suggetions if I spelled the word wrong. I will definitely use this one the most in the future.

Number 5 http://thesaurus.com/ is the winner!
